Taco Bell to Bring Back Its Mexican Pizza at $4.49

Mexican Pizza

After nearly a two-year hiatus, Taco Bell is set to bring back the beloved menu item.  Starting May 19, the chain will return the Mexican Pizza permanently on its menus.  The brand removed the pizza from its menus in November 2020 after the global health pandemic hit fast-food chains, which helped it shed complexities and reduce costs.

This sparked outrage among the brand’s loyal fans, such as Indian Americans, who started an online petition requesting Taco Bell return the pizza.  The petition garnered approximately 200,000 signatures.  Fans referred to Mexican Pizza as one of the few “fun” vegetarian options.

The item was introduced to customers in 1985 under the name “Pizzazz Pizza.  The Mexican Pizza is .”made up of a tortilla shell filled with ground beef or beans and a pizza sauce.  Another tortilla shell is placed on top and smothered with extra sauce, chopped tomatoes, and cheese.

The petition creator Krish Jagirdar was enlisted to celebrate the return of the pizza.  In a press release, he said, “Like many Indian-Americans who grew up vegetarian, we had limited access to the ‘fun’ fast food, so Taco Bell became a bridge to belonging in American culture for many kids like me who grew up in immigrant households.”

As a result, Taco Bell’s loyalty program members can begin ordering the Mexican Pizza beginning May 17.  The item will cost $4.49.

On the other hand, Taco Bell has improved the pizza’s packaging.  In a press statement, Taco Bell said it has “worked to streamline operations and ingredient sourcing and leave a lighter footprint at the same time.”

Businesses in the hospitality sector compete for customers’ attention and dollars.  Therefore fast-food chains offer specialty offerings to cut through the noise.  That is why Taco Bell regularly adds limited-time offers to its menus in order to stimulate customer interest.
